Meet Teddy Lockhart

Hometown: Sewell, NJ

As we prepare to celebrate Commencement season, we are proud to feature Theodore “Teddy” Lockhart III, a senior who will be walking the Prudential Center stage on May 28.

Teddy is a first‑generation college student majoring in Business Management and Africana World Studies whose journey at William Paterson University has been defined by leadership, service, and community impact. During his time at WP, Teddy served as Student Government Association President, worked in Residence Life, supported new students as an Orientation Leader, competed as a student‑athlete, and found brotherhood and leadership development through Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc.

Teddy’s story reflects the power of opportunity, mentorship, and belonging — and highlights the many ways WP empowers students to find their voice and lead with purpose.

The following responses were shared by Teddy Lockhart as part of the Pioneer Family Corner Q&A and are presented in his own words.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your connection to William Paterson University.
“My name is Theodore ‘Teddy’ Lockhart III, and I’m a senior at William Paterson University majoring in Africana World Studies and Business Management. As a first‑generation college student, coming to William Paterson meant more than just going to school — it was an opportunity to open doors for myself and my family.

During my time here, I served as Student Government Association President, worked in Residence Life as an Office Manager, helped welcome new students as an Orientation Leader, was a student‑athlete, and became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Through these experiences, WP became more than a campus to me. It became a community that helped me find my voice, step into leadership, and show other first‑generation students that they belong here too.”

What does being part of the Pioneer community mean to you?
“Being part of the Pioneer community means being part of a place where people genuinely want to see you grow and succeed. The support from mentors, staff, and other students helped me find my confidence and push myself into leadership roles I never imagined.”

What made you or your family choose William Paterson University?
“My family and I chose WP because it offered a strong education without placing a heavy financial burden on my family. It was also close enough to home that I could stay connected while still growing independently. What really stood out was the tight‑knit community — people actually know you and want to see you succeed.”

Share a memorable experience you’ve had as part of the WP community.
“One of my most memorable experiences was giving a speech during New Student Orientation in summer 2023. Being able to welcome incoming students and their families and share my journey meant a lot. Afterward, students and parents told me they felt inspired and excited to start their own WP journey, and that reminded me how powerful it is to share your story.”

How have you seen growth — in yourself or the community — since becoming part of WP?
“When I arrived in 2022, student engagement was low following COVID. That motivated me to get involved and help bring energy back to campus. Serving as SGA President allowed me to work with student leaders and administrators to help create programs that encouraged students to reconnect. Personally, I’ve become more confident, independent, and prepared to lead both on and off campus.”

What support, resource, or program at WP has made a positive impact on you?
“The EOF Office played a huge role in my success, along with Residence Life and faculty mentors who supported me academically and personally. These spaces reminded me that I was never navigating this journey alone.”

What do you appreciate most about WP’s community, culture, or mission?
“I appreciate how WP meets students where they are. Every student has a different journey, and the culture here reflects that through genuine support, encouragement, and opportunities to grow.”

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone just joining the Pioneer family?
“Get involved and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. The more you put into your experience here, the more you’ll grow. Believe that you belong — because you do.”

In your opinion, what makes WP special?
“What makes WP special is the people. Faculty, staff, and administrators genuinely care about students’ success. WP opened doors for me, challenged me to lead, and gave me confidence I didn’t have before.”

Is there anything else you’d like to share with the Pioneer community?
“Thank you to the William Paterson community for believing in me and giving me the space to grow. I’m proud to be a Pioneer and I hope to continue making the community proud as I move forward.”

Teddy Lockhart’s journey reflects the spirit of William Paterson University — a place where first‑generation students are supported, leadership is cultivated, and voices are empowered. As Teddy prepares to graduate and walk the Prudential Center stage, his story serves as a reminder of what is possible when opportunity meets community.

Pioneer Family Corner exists to uplift stories like Teddy’s — stories of growth, leadership, and belonging — and we are proud to celebrate his accomplishments with our WP community.
