Introducing Pioneer Family Corner: April 2026 Feature – The Browne Family

A group of five people, smiling together, is featured in an image labeled "Meet the Browne Family" from Pioneer Family Corner.

Welcome to the Pioneer Family Corner, a new monthly feature on the William Paterson Family Portal that celebrates the voices, stories, and lived experiences of our WP community. Each month, we will highlight a family, student, or campus partner who shares their unique journey and reflects on what it truly means to be part of the Pioneer family.

Through these stories, we hope to strengthen connections, elevate family perspectives, and highlight the many ways our Pioneer community shows up for one another.

Do you or your family have a story to share? We would love to hear from you!

We look forward to celebrating more Pioneer stories throughout the year.

Meet The Browne Family

Hometown: East Orange, NJ

The Browne Family represents the heart of William Paterson University — legacy, leadership, service, and family pride. Brenda Browne is a proud William Paterson alumna and the mother of Brelyn, a first‑year student majoring in Social Work. As a graduate of WP herself, Brenda’s connection to the university comes full circle as she now watches her daughter begin her own Pioneer journey.

With deep roots in the WP community, Brenda reflects on her transformative experience as a student, the growth she has seen in her daughter, and the continued sense of belonging that keeps her family connected to campus. The Browne Family’s story is a powerful reminder of how WP becomes home — not just for students, but for families across generations.

The following responses were shared by the Browne Family as part of the Pioneer Family Corner Q&A and are presented in their own words.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your connection to William Paterson University.
“I am a WPU graduate and the mom of a first-year freshman, Brelyn. I majored in Psychology with a minor in African, African‑American & Caribbean Studies and lived on campus, having the most phenomenal experiences at WP. It feels great knowing my daughter is only 20 minutes away and that our family can provide her with support, care packages, or anything else she may need to be successful in college. She is majoring in Social Work and plans to do amazing things in service of others.”

What does being part of the Pioneer community mean to you?
“Being a Pioneer feels like family and inclusion. To watch how the university has evolved is magnificent to behold.”

What made you or your family choose William Paterson University?
“WP was the only college I applied to in high school. My mom attended Upsala College and stressed the importance of continuing my education. I also met the Charter Members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Pi Iota Chapter, who were so engaging and made WP feel like the right choice. My daughter decided to attend WP in Fall 2025 because of the affordability, dorm life, supportive staff, and because I spoke so highly about my experience.”

Share a memorable experience you’ve had as part of the WP community.
“Some of my most memorable experiences include joining Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Pi Iota Chapter; receiving support from staff and professors such as Leslie Agard‑Jones, Dr. Bell, Roland Watts, Carmen Ortiz, Dr. Smalls, Aubyn Lewis, and Georgia Daniels; building close relationships with fellow students; and participating in WP’s first winter graduation during the historic snowstorm of 1996.”

How have you seen growth — in yourself, your student, or the community — since becoming part of WP?
“My college experience helped me become more independent through work‑study, learning time management, and managing finances. I’ve also seen my daughter grow as she manages her time, gets herself to class, and submits assignments on time. Will Power has been an extraordinary help in her transition to college life.”

What support, resource, or program at WP has made a positive impact on you or your family?
“There are many staff members and departments that have been incredibly supportive, including Eva Reyes, Johanna Torres, Myranda Louis Jean, Academic Support Services, Residence Life, the Social Work Department, Carmen Ortiz, Lt. Walker, and Roy Garcia. Special kudos to President Richard J. Helldobler for his vision, leadership, and expansion of WP.”

What do you appreciate most about WP’s community, culture, or mission?
“I appreciate the Parent and Family Relations Department for helping us navigate the college experience and answering our questions. The Family Portal, newsletter, and virtual workshops have kept us connected and informed. I also love that WP keeps alumni engaged through events like Homecoming and mentorship opportunities. We value that WP is both an African‑American and Hispanic‑Serving Institution, and that students like Brelyn remain engaged through fun and empowering campus programming.”

What is one piece of advice you’d give to someone just joining the Pioneer family?
“Learn about the many departments and resources available at WP. Get involved, make friends, and take advantage of Academic Support Services. There truly is something for everyone.”

In your opinion, what makes WP special?
“WP is special because of its sense of community, belonging, and lifelong friendships. Greek Life provided leadership opportunities that shaped my journey and allowed me to give back through mentorship. The beautiful campus and modern improvements further enhance the college experience.”

Is there anything else you’d like to share with the Pioneer community?
“If I had to choose, I would choose William Paterson University all over again. WP laid the foundation for my success and inspired me to earn two master’s degrees. I continue to serve my community proudly and remain deeply connected to WP. This is a place that helps you grow — academically, professionally, and personally.”

The Browne Family’s story reflects the enduring spirit of William Paterson University — a place where generations are shaped, leadership is cultivated, and a true sense of belonging is felt long after graduation. Their journey reminds us that being a Pioneer is not just about where you study or work, but about the relationships, growth, and community that stay with you for a lifetime.

Pioneer Family Corner exists to uplift stories like this — stories of connection, resilience, and pride — and we are grateful to the Browne Family for sharing their experience with our WP community.
